May Day is a common holiday for working people around the world. The origin of May Day is as follows:

This section originated from the workers' strike in Chicago, USA. On May 1, 1886, over 200000 workers in Chicago held a general strike in pursuit of the implementation of the eight hour working system. After arduous and bloody struggle, they finally achieved victory. To commemorate this workers' movement, on July 14, 1889, the Socialist Congress convened by Marxists from various countries solemnly opened in Paris, France. At the conference, representatives unanimously agreed to designate May 1st as a common holiday for the international proletariat. This resolution has received positive responses from workers from all over the world. On May 1, 1890, the working class of European and American countries took the lead in taking to the streets, holding grand demonstrations and rallies to fight for their legitimate rights and interests.

The celebration of Labor Day by the Chinese people can be traced back to 1918. Back then, some revolutionary intellectuals distributed flyers introducing May Day to the masses in Shanghai, Suzhou, and other places. On May 1, 1920, workers from cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou took to the streets to hold a grand parade and rally.

On the eve of May Day in 1921, workers learned to sing the "May Day Memorial Song" at the Changxindian Labor School founded by Deng Zhongxia, a member of the Communist Group in Beijing. The lyrics of the song are: "Beauty is freedom, a world star, with all my passion and sacrifice for him, we must sweep away all the power system, and remember the good day of May 1st. Red flags fly, we walk the bright path, each doing our best, each taking their own needs, regardless of poverty, wealth, or lowly. Responsibility is mutual assistance, and we hope everyone can work together to make progress." This magnificent and powerful song is jointly created by teachers from Changxindian Labor Internship School and progressive students from Peking University.

After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the State Council of the Central People's Government designated May 1st as the statutory Labor Day in December 1949, with a national holiday on that day. Every year on this day, the whole country celebrates, and people change into festive attire and gather in parks, theaters, and squares in high spirits to participate in various celebration gatherings or cultural and entertainment activities, and to commend workers for their outstanding contributions.
